Monrovia, Liberia – As a major danger to Liberia’s democracy, President Joseph Nyumah Boakai has strongly condemn the fire situation that destroyed portions of the Capitol Building (Lower House of Legislature) and promised that those found guilty will be held accountable.
President Boakai told reporters during a quick stop at the Capitol on Wednesday morning that he has instructed Justice Minister Oswald Tweh to examine the situation thoroughly. The President said, “I have given the Minister of Justice permission to serve as the head of an investigation and see to it that those found guilty are held accountable.”
The specific root cause of the fire is yet unknown, but President Boakai’s comments raised the likelihood of foul play. “Any action that aims to compromise the functioning of our government will not be tolerated.”
Early on Wednesday morning, the fire started and spread across the joint chamber. Limited resources and equipment made it difficult for firefighters to contain the fire, which caused significant damage to the building. Emphasizing the Capitol Building’s significance as a representation of Liberia’s democracy, the President promised to see to it that it is restored.
Meanwhile many Liberians have alleged that the fire was cause by yesterdays’ protester who threatened to do so. Video circulating social media shows Montserrado County District number 9 Law maker, Frank Saah Foko threatening to burn the building.
