A national holiday has been declared for Friday by President George Manneh Weah. By a proclamation issued today, November 8, the Liberian Leader designated Friday, November 11, 2022, as a national holiday to commemorate the start of the country’s census count according to a Foreign Ministry release. Given the benefits and usefulness of the Census to the overall national socio-economic development of the country, the Proclamation calls on all ministries and agencies of government, businesses (large or small), every citizen’s patriotism and loyalty, every foreign national’s goodwill, as well as local government officials, to assist the census authorities in explaining, influencing, and endorsing everyone’s participation in this massive, national undertaking.
According to Pres. Weah, the LISGIS team will be able to access households and start the counting process over the holiday, which will last until the end of the month.
Even though the conduct of the 2022 census has been marred by controversies and dissatisfaction over enumerators’ payments and benefits, authorities of LISGiS have disclosed the collection of quality data is assured.
The goals of the 2022 Census include, but are not limited to, participating in the 2020 round of the World Population and Housing Censuses, providing current information on demographics, economic, and social amenities, knowing the current size and structure of the population and its spatial distribution among counties, districts, clans, cities, townships, and localities, and providing a benchmark on which monitoring and evaluating various national and international development initiatives can be done.
