Discuss Rice Production in Liberia

President George Manneh Weah of Liberia met for a whole day with a group from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to promote cooperation, particularly in the agricultural industry.

On Tuesday, the President hosted technicians from the UAE in the Executive Mansion. In attendance were top government officials including Agriculture Minister, Jeannie Cooper, the National Port Authority Managing Director, Bill Twehway, Commerce Minister Mawine Diggs, and Minister of State without Portfolio Troken Kpei. Mr. Abdulla Ibraheem Mohamed Ahmed Alhammadi led the UAE delegation to discuss efficiency in the production of Liberia’s staple food (RICE).

After the discussion, Minister Kpei stated that the goal was to make Liberia a rice exporter rather than only an importer.

According to the minister, discussions about increasing rice production first surfaced in 2019, but President Weah recently convened a discussion about investing in agriculture, particularly rice production, to help the country’s widespread food shortages.

Speaking at the same event, NPA Managing Director Bill Twehway stated that during the delegation’s previous trip to Liberia, which included 15 persons, they visited the Freeport of Monrovia and the Port of Buchannan as one of the main participants in the collaboration.

He claimed that the ports would serve as the main route via which Liberia would have to sell rice to its neighbors and other nations.
