REITERATES LIBERIA’S ADHERENCE TO UNITED NATIONS CORE VALUES

Sinkor, Monrovia – President George Manneh Weah has emphasized the UN’s significance on a worldwide scale and praised Liberia’s contribution to the organization’s founding 78 years ago. According to President Weah, the UN remains the sole organization capable of maintaining international peace and security. Recalling that the purpose of the United Nations is to uphold international peace and security as well as foster international cooperation on issues of economic, social, and humanitarian concern, President Weah joined the UN family in Liberia on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, for the commemoration of the body’s 78th anniversary.

The President informed the audience that the UN has been unrelenting in its efforts to uphold international peace and security, enhance the social and economic circumstances of people everywhere, and heal national divisions to allow for peaceful coexistence ever since the UN charter was signed. President Weah reiterates Liberia’s dedication to the goals, aspirations, and objectives of the UN, as he has done throughout the years.

“Liberia therefore reaffirms its belief in the United Nations as the global platform on which the world will continue to experience peace, security and harmony.”

The Liberia Leader stated that, this year’s theme, “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Solidarity: Accelerating Action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals in Liberia Towards Peace, Prosperity, Progress, and Sustainability for All”, is a strong request that Liberians specify their top priorities for the 2030 Agenda.

According to President Weah, Liberia is convinced that the UN has fulfilled its responsibility of preventing war, genocide, and suffering for future generations. He emphasised that the UN should keep up its efforts to lead the global effort to bring calm and peace to all of the regions in the world where there are conflicts and trouble. Mr. Weah also mentioned Liberia’s involvement in the United Nations Integrated Multidimensional Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) when stating that the nation is dedicated to supporting peace-building efforts.

President Weah declared that Liberia had endorsed the Secretary-General’s Action for Peacekeeping (A4P) Initiative. According to him, the initiative seeks to improve peacekeeping by enlisting more support for political solutions, strengthening and safer operations, equipping and training forces more effectively, and granting more specific mandates.

The Liberian Leader said, the endorsement demonstrates Liberia’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda, which is mirrored in the Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD), which has as its main objectives the maintenance of peace and security to keep the country focused on its future development agenda, industrialization, infrastructure development, and the creation of jobs.

“Given this context, my administration has placed a high priority on free healthcare, education, and roads. We have also made sure that citizens’ inalienable rights are respected and protected, as well as the protection of human rights, press freedom, and the continuous battle against corruption.”

He also emphasised how the festivities this year correspond with the political season in Liberia, where voters exercised their democratic rights in the October 10 polls and are getting ready for a runoff election on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, to choose their President.

He expressed gratitude to Liberia”s partners, allies, and the United Nations for their support on the path to sustainable democracy, and promised to honour the trust placed in him to lead the procedure going forward.
