President George Manneh Weah on June I5 led an array of government officials to a symposium held in honor of former Interim President, the late Dr. Amos Claudius Sawyer’s 77th birth anniversary. The one-day event was organized by family, friends, associates, and comrades of the late statesman, reflecting on his life and contributions to Liberia.

The Liberian Leader thanked the Sawyer’s family for the invitation extended him to attend the befitting program, saying he was pleased to join family and friends to honor Dr. Sawyer, and he again extended condolences to the bereaved family, describing the passing of Dr. Sawyer as the loss of a political giant, a man of peace, a teacher, a mentor, a statesman, and a father of renewed democracy, adding that he was a true patriot.

After many speakers have extolled the virtues and chronicles of Dr. Sawyer, his steering contributions to peace, governance, and democracy that the country now enjoys. For his part, the President further mentioned that Dr. Amos Claudius Sawyer was his mentor and role model and an inspiration, noting the former Interim Leader had a good virtue and he worked closely with him over the years and the main lesson he learned from him was creating harmony among people through dialogue and negotiation and the importance of making and keeping the peace.

The Liberian Chief Executive told the gathering that during Dr. Sawyer’s tenure as an Interim President he appointed him as Peace Ambassador and assigned him the critical task to preach the message of peace to the young people of Liberia so they will study war no more.
    .
He narrated that Dr. Sawyer created a democratic society so that everyone will have rights and choice, ” We going to miss him, I going to miss him, because I am a son of Dr. Sawyer and Comany Wesseh knows that”, the President said and that he is a son of the Movement for Justice in Africa (MOJA), a pan-African left-wing political organization in Liberia, with chapters in Ghana and The Gambia. It was founded in 1973 by Togba Nah Tipoteh, who is currently its president.

“I want to say something here and please forgive me if I said it wrongfully, Dr. Sawyer was different among all of you. And I hope that all of you, including my uncle Dr. Tipoteh, will understand that Dr. Sawyer wanted to leave a legacy so that we can live in a free democratic society. I pray that all of you will chat the same path, to teach our young people how to dialogue so that we can create harmony and be peaceful in our country”, he said.

Speaking further the Liberian Leader noted that Dr. Sawyer was against anything that was against the human race, he was there for humanity and peace, bringing to attention that all will be responsible enough to know that Dr. Sawyer stood for peace.
