As Liberia Commemorates 177th Independence Anniversary

Monrovia, Liberia – Amb. Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., the President of the Republic of Liberia, has proclaimed Friday, July 26, 2024, as Independence Day, which will be observed as a national holiday across the country.
The Proclamation asks everyone who resides in Liberia’s borders, including foreigners, to observe the Day as such. In accordance with the Patriotic and Cultural Observance Law of 1956, the Proclamation designates July 26th as a public holiday that would be honored annually and called “Independence Day.”
All government buildings and commercial establishments are to stay closed throughout the celebration, which runs from six o’clock ante meridian to six o’clock post meridian, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.
The formal celebration, with the theme “Building a New Liberia for All Liberians,” will be held in the City of Monrovia, Montserrado County, according to the Proclamation. Additionally, there will be an indoor celebration honoring the day starting at eleven o’clock ante meridian at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion on Ashmun Street in Montserrado County.
In addition, the proclamation asks and invites all Liberians, regardless of religious beliefs, to assemble in their respective places of worship throughout the country on Friday, July 19, and Sunday, July 21, 2024, especially in the city of Monrovia, for the sole purpose of giving thanks and praise to God for the nation’s blessings and pleading with Him for His ongoing goodness and beneficence towards Liberians and peoples worldwide.
The Proclamation says that it is to honor the nation’s ancestors’ courageous and prescient decision on July 26, 1847, as well as to express gratitude for the blessings and miraculous deliverance that His Almighty Hand has bestowed upon Liberia as a Nation and State, of which the nation has been unworthy.
The Proclamation further stated that following careful consideration of the settlement’s future as well as the challenges and threats posed by colonialism, the founding fathers published the historic and enduring “Declaration of Independence” to the world. Through this document, the Commonwealth of Liberia was presented to the international community as a free, sovereign, and independent state, fending off invasion by any colonial powers and establishing itself as the “First Independence African Republic.”
