Monrovia, Liberia – President Boakai has establishe a committee to investigate and choose candidates for the reorganization of the leadership of the Office of War and Economic Crimes Court (WECC). Executive Order #131 established the Office of War and Economic Crimes Court, which aims to build the procedures and frameworks necessary for the establishment of an Anti-Corruption Court and a Special War Crimes Court for Liberia.
The President Boakai decided to carefully screen candidates for the WECC office due to many complaint from the Civil Society, Human Rights Organizations and other institutions of the leadership put in place to head the court. Dr. Robtel Pailey’s remarks at Liberia’s 177th Independence Day oration is one of the many call for President Boakai to change the current leadership. Dr. Pailey claimed that Cllr. Jonathan Massaquoi, the WECC Executive Director, was chosen under questionable conditions.
During the July 26, 2024, oration, Dr. Paiely implored President Boakai to rescind the nomination and prevent political maneuvering from sabotaging one of his most significant appointments .She also asked him to appoint honorable Liberian human rights advocates to the position, many of whom have been fighting for decades in the trenches.
The new screening committee was revealed by Liberia’s Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah on Thursday, August 15, 2024, during a news conference held at the Ministry of Information in Monrovia. Minister Piah reported that the committee is tasked with assessing candidates to head the WECC office established by President Boakai’s Executive Order #131 announced on Thursday.
Minister Piah stated that there has been discussion about the procedure for choosing its leadership in the media and on a global scale ever since the office was established. Piah therefore underlined the government’s dedication to broadening the process in order to guarantee that Liberian and foreign stakeholders are at ease with the proceedings.
