RELEASE
Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has by proclamation declared Wednesday, June 5, 2024, as World Environment Day and is to be observed throughout the Republic of Liberia as a Working Holiday.
President Boakai calls upon all people residing in the territorial confines of Liberia to cooperate with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in executing the appropriate programs befitting the occasion.
According to a Foreign Ministry release, as a member of the world environmental community, Liberia will join in the celebration of “World Environment Day” under the global theme: “Accelerating land restoration, drought resilience & desertification progress” and the national theme: “Our land. Our future.”
According to the Presidential Proclamation, World Environment Day offers a platform to draw attention to the environment’s significance on a global scale and to enable individuals to take an active role in promoting sustainable and fair development.
The Proclamation emphasizes that in order to fully celebrate the day, all national governments, businesses, communities, and individuals must take national action to preserve and restore productive land, which has the potential to improve livelihoods, support food security, increase carbon storage, and strengthen resilience to extreme weather.
In 1972, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution designating June 5th as “World Environment Day,” to be honored annually by all UN members.
