Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia has reiterated the One China Policy, which represents the People’s Republic of China’s foreign policy stance in dealings with other nations. Concerns about the state of the country’s relations with China have grown in some quarters as a result of the previous administration’s handling of China with less attention.
President Boakai reaffirmed his commitment to the One China Policy and said that his administration will seek to ensure that the country’s relationships will be improved in an address to the media on Monday, January 29, 2024, before giving his annual message.
China, according to the president, is a trustworthy partner and strategic ally that has worked well with Liberia, offering significant assistance in many areas of the nation’s development agenda.
“We are committed to the One China Policy, and we have assured the Chinese about our commitment, and this, we do not intend to change.”
President Boakai added that the People’s Republic of China has made significant contributions to Liberia’s development agenda, particularly in the areas of infrastructure and enhancing young Liberians’ access to education.
In order to attend President Joseph Nyumah Boakai’s inauguration, it is recorded that President Xi Jinping designated the Vice Chairperson of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference as his Special Envoy to Liberia. President Boakai reiterated during their courteous conversation that he was in charge of the Senate at the time the One China Policy was made official by Liberian law and that he plans to enforce and respect the legislation. The President also noted China’s efforts to uphold the rights of the over 800 million people who have been pulled out of poverty. As we work to lift Liberians out of poverty, Liberia expects to gain knowledge from this experience.
China has been a major contributor to the nation’s infrastructural change, contributing resources to numerous noteworthy projects since the end of the civil strife and the restoration of democratic rule.
In addition to funding the building of the renowned Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex and two more Capitol Building annexes, China also intervened in the health sector and other areas. Numerous projects were shelved or temporarily delayed as a result of strained relations with the previous administration.
