Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph Boakai has officially convened a special session of the 55th Legislature to be held for 30 days, less than two weeks into the legislatures First Quarterly Break.
Members of the Liberian Senate and House of Representatives will debate and take action on subjects of national importance when they reconvene later this week. The President defined such issues as urgent, pressing concerns facing the country.
This will be the first Special Session of the the 55th Legislature in 2024, if the House of Representatives and the Senate grant the President’s request.
Article 32(b) of the Liberian Constitution of 1986, which says that the President may announce an extension of a normal session of the Legislature on his own initiative or upon receiving a certificate signed by a minimum of one-fourth of the members of each House, provides support for the President’s action.
The Special Session will convene on Monday, April 1, 2024, and conclude on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, as per the March 25, 2024, message from President Boakai to Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence and Speaker Fonati Koffa. It was also mentioned in the communication that there are significant national challenges that require quick attention.
The Liberian leader mentioned Agi-Enterprise in Project participating counties and the approval of the Fiscal Year Draft 2024 National Budget.
