Monrovia, Liberia – Monday, January 1, 2024 has been proclaimed as “New Year’s Day” by President George Manneh Weah, and it will be celebrated as a national holiday across the Republic of Liberia. According to the declaration, the Day must be observed by all Liberians and international residents.

In accordance with a statement from the Foreign Ministry, the proclamation also commands and guides all foreign nationals living within the borders, as well as all Prelates, Priests, Deacons, Evangelists, Imams, and other members of the Sacerdotal Order, irrespective of their religious beliefs, to come together in their places of worship for the common goal of pleading for God’s unwavering kindness and generosity towards all peoples and nations on earth, particularly the Liberian people.

The proclamation further said that the first day of January is designated as a national holiday every year, known as “New Year’s Day,” and should be duly observed under the Patriotic Cultural Observance Law, Title 25, Liberian Code of Laws of 1956.

This day affords many citizens and residents of Liberia the opportunity to celebrate the infinite goodness and mercy of the Almighty who has blessed and prospered the work of the minds, hearts and hands of all the people of Liberia during the previous year.

According to the Gregorian calendar, New Year’s Day, which falls on January 1, the first Monday of the year, signifies the beginning of a new year.
