PRESS RELEASE Traditional Legislative Ratification Needs Significant Structural Overhaul Says Speaker Bhofal Chambers

House Speaker Dr. Bhofal Chambers says it is necessary that the first two Branches of Government jointly engage and participate in the crafting of all agreements, especially all concession agreements before submission to the Legislature for passage or ratification.

According to a statement from the House communication center, speaking Monday, January 24, 2022, shortly after President Weah’s State of the Nation Address, Speaker Chambers noted that the approach will enhance or strengthen the Legislature’s enactment and oversight roles. He stressed that the tradition for legislative ratification needs a significant structural overhaul.

At the same time, the House Speaker has stressed to look more in the direction to boost Liberia’s economy so that all institutions or functionaries of Government work in the interest of the Liberian people.

Speaker Chambers called on the members of the 54th Legislature to revisit laws controlling many of the economic areas in the Country; including mining, Land, Forestry, Agriculture insurance, Telecommunications, and Electricity among others.

According to the House Speaker, there is a strong case of the Government adopting the path of public-private partnership or joint venture type of investment practice. He also wants the Legislature to enact legislation to stabilize the Country’s economy.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives says the underfunding of the National County Meet is critically a pressing National problem the Nation has been and is still facing.

According to him, all of the Counties do not have the same capacity in preparing their teams; adding that they often travel under extreme conditions to games expressing fear that if this trend continues, fairness in the process or the optimization of the County meet competition will be a distant reality, if not an illusion.

He wants the State to take ownership and not rely on the goodwill of individuals; noting that it is therefore categorically timely that the Legislature appropriates one hundred thousand United States dollars (US$100,000) to each county directly to independently manage their funds for full participation.

Speaker Chambers further indicated that two hundred fifty-thousand United States dollars (US$250,000) could be provided to the Youth and Sports Ministry for its supervisory role in the conduct of the competition.
