Protecting Nature: ArcelorMittal-FDA Sign MoU

Monrovia, Liberia – The Forestry Development Authority (FDA) and the Co-Management Committee of the East Nimba Nature Reserve (CMC-ENNR) and ArcelorMittal Liberia signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support the conservation and management of the East Nimba Nature Reserve (ENNR).

The agreement is a component of the Biodiversity Conservation Programme (BCP) of ArcelorMittal Liberia, which was created to operationalize the business’s biodiversity and environmental responsibilities under the terms of its Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) with the Philippine government.

In order to improve protected area management, law enforcement, biodiversity monitoring, and community participation inside ENNR, ArcelorMittal Liberia will offer focused financial and technical assistance through this partnership.

Michiel Van Der Merwe, the chief executive officer of ArcelorMittal Liberia, informed the FDA and the Co-management Committee of the East Nimba Nature Reserve (ENNR) of AML’s support for their efforts to preserve the environment and nature during the MOU signing ceremony at the FDA office in Paynesville.

“We reiterate our support and acknowledge the excellent work being done by the FDA. These programs are in line with our basic beliefs and the things we hope to accomplish and see in the nation. As we grow our business, we want to make sure that we leave the place in a better state than when we found it. That’s our approach,” CEO Van Der Merwe clarified.

Rudolph J. Merab Sr., Managing Director of the Forestry Development Authority (FDA), also welcomed the relationship, calling it a smart and timely alliance that will improve conservation efforts in the East Nimba Nature Reserve. According to him, the MOU shows both the public and private sectors share responsibility for safeguarding Liberia’s biodiversity and promoting sustainable development for both the current and future generations.

Key to the larger ecological environment of Mount Nimba, ENNR is a federally designated protected area. The collaboration strengthens a mutual dedication to protecting Liberia’s natural heritage while encouraging prudent resource use and long-term environmental care.
