Monrovia, Liberia – A 34-year-old Ministry of Agriculture contractor named Sando Kromah was imprisoned at the Monrovia Central Prison on rape charges by the court, while suspended Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Bryant McGill, who is also facing similar charges, is still at large and has not been arrested or sent to court. This has raised concerns among Liberian citizens about what many refer to as selective justice in the country’s legal system.
There has been a lot of public discussion over the conflicting events, with many Liberians wondering if McGill’s status as a government minister has protected him from being detained and charged.
Speaking to our reporter in Monrovia on Thursday, October 2, 2025, residents argued that the prompt action taken against suspect Kromah, in contrast to the lack of action in McGill’s case, demonstrates a justice system that punishes common people while favoring the powerful.
“The law should be equal for everyone, whether you are a minister or a contractor. Why is McGill still walking free while Kromah is already in jail?” a concerned Monrovia resident asked.
“No one is about the law,” remarked another resident. Permit McGill to be taken into custody and face legal action. By now, he ought to be in prison and not walking around acting like a criminal with no crimes committed.
Sando Kromah, a 34-year-old contractor for the Ministry of Agriculture, was recently imprisoned at Monrovia Central Prison on suspicion of statutory rape against a 14-year-old girl, according to a report by Crime Watch Liberia.
A medical report verified indications of abuse, and police said the victim reported being beaten at Kromah’s flat on September 24, 2025. Until his indictment and trial, Kromah is still in pre-trial custody.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports in Liberia has also been rocked by a scandal after Minister Cllr. Jeror Cole Bangalu confirmed that McGill, the Deputy Minister for Youth Development, was being investigated criminally for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl who was the daughter of the Ministry’s Deputy Chief of Security.
Minister Bangalu said, the Liberia National Police (LNP) has taken up the issue and that a thorough investigation is in progress after the news went viral. He underlined that sexual misconduct and unethical behavior are not tolerated under his government.
“Yes, we can confirm the case is with the police. Investigation is ongoing. At the Ministry under my watch, there is zero tolerance for unethical behavior, especially sexual misconduct. We are not taking this lightly,” he said in a statement.
Until the investigation’s conclusion, the Youth and Sports Minister stated that administrative action would be taken promptly.
