Paynesville, Montserrado County – The newest disclosure made by Freedom FM’s Talk Show presenter, Abraham Godsent Wheon, has drawn the serious attention of Senator Steve Zargo, the Liberian Senate’s Chairman on Defense, Security, Intelligence, and Veteran Affairs.
Speaking on the radio last week, Mr. Wheon said that Major General Prince Charles Johnson, III, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, is a supporter of the Unity Party. He added that this information led to more AFL members voting against President George Weah on the program Face the Issues on Freedom 87.9 FM, a local station in Monrovia, Liberia, which is owned by the Deputy Head of the National Security Agency.
Additionally, according to Mr. Wheon, General Johnson decommissioned the majority of the AFL commissioners, which he claimed led to decisions being made within the force against the Weah government.
Speaking to the media in Paynesville on Friday, October 20, 2023, departing Senator Steve Zargo of Lofa County stated that while Mr. Abraham Godsent Wheon has since apologized, his remarks against the army are regrettable.
Additionally, Senator Zargo has demanded that the Freedom FM station manager be invited for questioning by the Press Union of Liberia, the Ministry of Justice, and President George Weah’s Security Advisor. He said, according to the new military code of conduct, which states that a single person cannot decommission until confirmations are made by the Liberian senate, he indicated that the Army Chief of Staff does not have the authority to do so.
”His statements are unfounded, and I believe this goes against the standards of journalism. I desire an urgent investigation against him by the Press Union of Liberia, the Ministry of Justice, and the president’s security advisor.”
Senator Zargo also questions the fast reading of Sam Saryon, the owner of Freedom FM, as Deputy Director for the National Security Agency, for having one of his workers spread lies about an independent security sector in the country. According to him, the Liberian Army’s trust in the regional bloc is also being undermined by his acts. The AFL has established a strong reputation there, but the most recent disclosures made by one of his employees are concerning.
“I represent Liberia in the ECOWAS Parliament in addition to being a senator for Lofa County, so I am aware of the situation there with reference to our nation. It is completely inappropriate for Sam Saryon, a security personnel, to allow such an incident to occur on his radio station.”
Sen. Zargo made reference to the people’s decision to be respected in response to his defeat in the Lofa County Senate, stating that it was an honor for him to represent his county in the National Legislature for the length of its representation.
”Even though I lost the election, everything has its time, according to Ecclesiastes 3:1 in the Book of Ecclesiastes. My people did not hit me for losing this election, but I’m ready to help out whenever needed. As a senator, I performed my duties. We must respect the will of our people, the Lofa County people, but I did not keep quiet about topics that were important to our people.”
