Monrovia, Liberia – A faculty decision to withdraw from all classroom activities has put the State-Run University, University of Liberia, in danger of experiencing an academic disruption.
The University of Liberia Faculty union (ULFA) made its decision on August 29, 2025, following weeks of unanswered complaints about unpaid salaries, unfavorable working conditions, and a shortage of teaching resources between the faculty union and the administration.
According to the body, the most recent issues include outstanding payment for overload and vacation school salaries. At an emergency general assembly, the faculty unanimously decided to refrain from all academic activities until the University of Liberia (UL) Administration, the Government of Liberia (GoL), and ULFA have signed a negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that addresses all ULFA issues. This decision was made in light of the unresolved outstanding issues.
ULFA issued a statement saying, “Therefore, all Faculty members are urged to disengage from any planned academic activities on all campuses of the UL until further notice.”
The emergency general assembly was based on the July 18, 2025, constitutional General Assembly (GA), which required the ULFA Executive Committee to discuss and present issues pertaining to faculty welfare to the University of Liberia (UL) Administration and other stakeholders within a month.
Today, September 1, 2025, was the anticipated start of the new semester year for State-Run University students.
