The World Food Program, WFP, and the Ministry of Education have officially launched the “Covid-19 crisis response assistance” to school-going children and their families in three of Liberia’s fifteen counties.
The “Take-Home-Rations” is a two million U.S. Dollars project funded by the government of the People’s Republic of China to benefit highly vulnerable school-going kids in Montserrado, Nimba, and Maryland Counties.
Remaking on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, during the first distribution of 25kg bags of rice to hundred students at the Wein town Public school in Paynesville, China’s Economic and Commercial Counselor to Liberia, Li Jiang said the two million projects is part of China’s support amid worsening food security situation across the country. Counselor Jiang also expressed China’s willingness to work with WFP and Liberia’s education ministry as implementing partners of the project.
Meanwhile, WFP Country Director Parvathy Ramaswami said in recent years, many families in Liberia have found it increasingly difficult to meet their daily nutrition needs. Madam Ramaswami stated as the result of family income losses and rising food prices due to covid-19 shocks, children across the country often go to sleep hungry.
Also speaking at the ceremony was Education minister Ansu Sonii, who admonished parents of school kids to always sacrifice the best for their children’s education. Minister Sonii extended appreciation to the People’s Republic of China for the funding and also encourage WFP to maintain its efforts of distributing food to vulnerable children in Liberia.
