Monrovia, Liberia – In order to settle a growing leadership crisis in the House of Representatives, where emotions have intensified following recent allegations of damage in the Joint Chambers, a high-profile team from the ECOWAS Parliament arrived in Liberia on Monday. Under the direction of Hon. Memounatou Ibrahima, Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, the five-member delegation seeks to promote communication between opposing groups at the House and aid in reunification.
Speaker Ibrahima emphasized ECOWAS’ dedication to promoting a peaceful settlement, saying, “I am here to discuss with my brothers and sisters of the House of Representatives, and those discussions will include the ongoing leadership crisis.”
Madam Ibrahima greeted the Liberian people warmly before her group arrived and emphasized the recent progress made in the nation, especially the smooth handover of power in January 2024. She did, however, voice serious worries about the current political deadlock in the Liberian House of Representatives, claiming that it jeopardizes regional security and stability.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, the current Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, has instructed the ECOWAS Parliament to facilitate an immediate parliamentary resolution to the crisis due to the unstable political landscape, which has been made worse by recent coups in neighboring countries, Speaker Ibrahima said in two separate communications to Speaker Fonati Koffa and Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah.
A five-member delegation from the ECOWAS Parliament will visit Monrovia on November 11 to participate in mediation efforts, Speaker Ibrahima responded. Two Deputy Speakers and two Representatives make up the delegation, which seeks to address the root reasons of the political impasse while encouraging communication among important parties.
According to the letter, the mission’s main objectives would be to learn more about the reasons for the standoff, how it affects Liberia’s stability, and make suggestions to the Liberian government and the ECOWAS Authority. However, in order to guarantee a comprehensive and fruitful discussion, the Speaker has voiced desire for collaboration from Liberia’s leadership.
