Monrovia, Liberia – In a statement, the US Embassy in the Monrovia called on legislators to respect democratic values and end the current House of Representatives deadlock. The call is made in the midst of mounting worries about political instability due to tensions that have halted legislative proceedings.

The Embassy stressed the value of preserving peace and called on leaders to show solidarity and oppose using violence to settle disputes. The statement said, “Violence is never the answer and it serves no one’s interest.”

In order to maintain Liberia’s democratic trajectory, the statement emphasized the necessity of open and transparent political processes. Important national initiatives are apparently at risk, and crucial decision-making has been impeded by the legislative impasse.

The US Embassy urged both parties to come to an agreement.

The Embassy statement added, “Liberians expect their leaders to uphold democracy and its practices, including open and peaceful debate.”

In its statement, the US Embassy reaffirmed that the US is still a partner in Liberia’s democratic journey and emphasized the importance of learning from previous mistakes in order to develop democratic institutions.

The US Embassy statement emphasized the need for a speedy resolution despite warnings from some legal experts that protracted legislative inactivity might undermine public trust in governance.
