AHEAD OF 2023 PRESIDENTIAL RUNOFF
Monrovia, Liberia – Political party leaders have begun holding private discussions ahead of the Liberia 2023 presidential runoff. During the talks, other political parties are supposed to be persuaded to participate in the runoff process alongside them. In the event that they concur, these parties will openly support the candidate they want.
The two eligible political parties for the runoff are the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the previous ruling Unity Party (UP), according to the National Election Commission. The two front-runners and qualified parties, the CDC and UP, began their campaigning yesterday, Tuesday, October 24, 2023, by visiting three close political parties, following the NEC’s announcement that the runoff campaign was now open.
With photos trending on social media, both CDC political leader and presidential candidate, George Manneh Weah, and Joseph N. Boakai of the UP were seen having meetings with leaders of the Collaborating Political Party (CPP), Alexander Cummings, the Grassroots Development Movement (GDM), Edward Appleton Jr., and Lusinee F. Kamara Sr., of the All Liberia Coalition Party (ALCOP).
Liberians are curious to hear from CPP Cummings where his support would go after meeting with the two parties in the runoff, given his early declaration of support for the opposition party. Thou Appleton has not decided; it is popularly believed that Thou Appleton will support the CDC in the runoff. it is also established that ALCOP declined to back the ruling party during a meeting with the CDC.
