Monrovia, Liberia – A day after former President George Manneh Weah visited the family home on 24th Street in Sinkor, the family of the late Nancy Doe family refused and returned the gifts he had given them.
The Liberian former president’s June 8 visit was intended to pay tribute to the late First Lady’s legacy while openly highlighting Weah and the Doe family’s support and togetherness, especially in view of social media rumors that suggested hostility between the two groups.
The package rejected by the bereaved family includes US$5,000 in cash, 50 bags of rice, and two cows. The rejection of the offer has stirred speculation, raising questions about underlying tensions or concerns surrounding the gesture.
On June 8, 2025, former President Weah visited and offered consolation to the former First Lady’s grieving family. He added, “I treated the late Mama Nancy Doe with respect.” We must not permit others to destroy our friendship. Our people are one. We require peace.
He said the deceased Doe was the wife of Samuel Kanyon Doe, Liberia’s 21st president, and had continued to be an important figure in Liberian politics and culture.
According to Amb. Weah, her passing signaled the end of an era for many, especially in Grand Gedeh County, which is home to the Doe political heritage. The deceased First Lady was a “national figure” whose impact went much beyond her position as a presidential spouse, according to the former president.
“Madam Doe was more than just a former president’s wife,” he stated. For many Liberians, she was a mother, a leader, and a representation of elegance and courage,” he remarked. “Her legacy endures, which is why we are here, not just because she is no longer with us.”
The vehicle was seen in the grieving family’s yard, and the goods were unloaded a few hours after the presents and supplies were turned down and returned to the CDC Headquarters in Congo Town.
A family member told reporters that there was a problem inside the family that led to the gifts that former President Weah gave being rejected, but that the problem has been fixed.
