ArcelorMittal Liberia Marks 2026 Health & Safety Day with ‘Zero Harm’ Commitment Across All Sites

Monrovia, Liberia – ArcelorMittal Liberia has observed its 2026 Health and Safety Day across its operational sites in Buchanan, Yekepa, Gangra, and Tokadeh Mines, bringing together employees, contractors, and management under the theme: “Making Zero Happen: Zero Harm, Zero Excuses.”

The event featured street parades, indoor sessions, and recognition of employees for outstanding safety performance through certificates and gifts of appreciation. It also reinforced the company’s commitment to strengthening a workplace culture where safety is a shared responsibility at all levels.

Delivering a message on behalf of CEO Michiel Vandermerwe, Head of Special Projects Cllr. Boakai Paegar urged employees to make safety a daily habit beyond the workplace, emphasizing vigilance and collective responsibility. “Let us watch out for our fellow workers, let us watch out for ourselves,” he said.

In Yekepa, Training Manager Dawie Loots cautioned against rushing and unsafe work practices, noting that most workplace accidents are preventable when risks are properly identified and addressed. Internal Auditor Arnold Mufandaedza also reminded employees of their responsibility to return home safely each day, aligning with the “zero harm” goal.

Angelique Myers-Jekula, the Concentrator’s Health and Safety Lead, reiterated the message, emphasising that all tasks must be completed with complete regard to safety regulations. ADT Operator Ellis Collins, better known as “Mega-G,” gave a vibrant performance during the celebration. His creative music with a safety theme inspired workers and brought excitement to the Yekepa program. ArcelorMittal Liberia’s dedication to integrating safety as a fundamental value throughout its operations was reiterated on Health and Safety Day.

Instead of viewing worker and host community safety and well-being as a need for compliance, ArcelorMittal views them as an operational priority that cannot be compromised. This commitment is further demonstrated in Liberia, where the company integrates strict safety regulations into every stage of its mining and logistics operations, ensuring that workers are protected by training, state-of-the-art equipment, and strict adherence to international best practices, while communities benefit from proactive engagement, emergency preparedness programs, and infrastructure designed with public safety in mind. ArcelorMittal demonstrates that ethical mining and sustainable growth are only possible when communities and people are protected first by incorporating safety into its corporate culture.
