Monrovia, Liberia – Under the leadership of Her Excellency Ana Nembe, the African Union (AU) team to Liberia has had a substantial impact on the country’s flood victims’ situation. In a show of support for individuals impacted by the recent terrible floods, Madam Nembe gave the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a cheque for US$200,000 after a successful visit of returnee camps in Montserrado and Grand Cape Mount counties.
On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the ceremony was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and attended by African Union members and top Ministry officials.
Speaking at the ceremony, Madam Nembe reaffirmed the AU’s steadfast commitment to helping Liberia during its difficult period. She stressed that the gift demonstrates the AU’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and regional solidarity.
“The African Union’s philosophy of collective solidarity and our profound concern for our brothers and sisters in Liberia, who are suffering tremendous hardships as a result of the recent floods, are demonstrated by this gesture. The AU supports Liberia, and we believe that this donation will help the impacted populations.”
A thorough tour of the camps in Montserrado and Grand Cape Mount counties that house flood victims and returnees was part of Madam Nembe’s visit. The group was able to learn directly about the living circumstances and pressing needs of the impacted communities thanks to the tour.
Honorable Gabriel H. Salee, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, accepted the contribution on behalf of the Government of Liberia and expressed sincere appreciation to the African Union for its prompt support.
“I express my sincere gratitude to the African Union on behalf of His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and the Liberian people for this kind gesture. Acting Minister Salee stated, “The money will be used for its original purpose, guaranteeing that the flood victims get the support they need to reconstruct their lives.
He said the African Union’s backing highlights the value of teamwork in resolving humanitarian emergencies around the continent.
The Liberian public and the AU delegation were reassured by Hon. Salee that the government is dedicated to accountability and openness in the distribution and use of the money.
“To guarantee that every dollar of our donation directly helps the impacted communities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will collaborate closely with pertinent parties. We owe this to our people and the African Union, whose confidence we much respect,” he said.
During the event, Hon. Salee also urged other regional and global allies to follow the African Union’s lead and offer assistance to Liberia.
“The magnitude of the catastrophe necessitates ongoing support from all sources, even though the AU’s contribution represents a noteworthy advancement. We can develop stronger communities and aid in our people’s recovery if we work together.”
Key representatives from the African Union and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the presenting event. Deputy Minister for Legal Affairs Cllr. Jeddi Armah and Mr. Jackson Paye, Acting Executive Director of LRRRC, were among the dignitaries in attendance.
The occasion further cemented the relationship between Liberia and the African Union by giving the two sides a chance to talk about more general matters of cooperation and support for one another.
It is anticipated that the contributed money will be extremely important in meeting the urgent requirements of flood victims, such as providing them with clean water, food, shelter, and medical treatment. One of Liberia’s biggest humanitarian problems in recent years has been the floods, which have devastated houses and infrastructure and forced thousands of people to flee their homes.
The African Union’s backing comes after other foreign allies have expressed similar solidarity, demonstrating a coordinated international response to Liberia’s protracted crisis.
