Monrovia, Liberia – Government personnel who maintain positions in political parties have been urged by President Joseph N. Boakai to uphold the Code of Conduct and resign from their positions.

At the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs special Cabinet meeting, which opened on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at the EJS Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, President Boakai made the following statement: “If you are working in the government and having a position in the party at the same time, you must resign one of your positions to respect the law.”

He claimed that the rule of conduct mentions public servants having party roles, which makes it challenging to actively pursue both jobs.

“Kindly review the conduct code. I believe we should look at the code of conduct and abide by its provisions if, as secretary general, you are managing an LPRC and it states that you should quit; otherwise, we risk breaking the law.”

“I don’t want people to think I am witch-hunting them,” said President Boakai. “We can’t have a country where two sperate people are above the law.”

He narrated that if those provisions in the code of conduct exist, government officials should begin to respect them.
The President declared that Liberia will be a better nation provided the rules of the land are upheld.

President Boakai urged the people to be aware of and abide by the Code of Conduct, explaining that some of his officials have not yet disclosed their assets so that the public may learn what properties they had before to entering public service.

The Liberian leader said that his administration will work with the courts and legislature to make sure they recognize that Liberia is a nation that need to be governed by the Code of Conduct.

“All officials appointed by the President of the Republic of Liberia shall not: engage in political activities, canvass or contest for elected offices; use government facilities, equipment, or resource in support of partisan activities; and serve on a campaign team of any political party, or the campaign of any independent candidate,” states part V of the Code of Conduct.
