Monrovia, Liberia – Margibi County District #2 Representative, Ivar K. Jones, has challenged graduates of the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) to embrace innovation, self-discovery, and skill development as key drivers for Liberia’s progress.
Addressing over 400 graduates during BWI’s 73rd Commencement Ceremony in Kakata, Margibi County, Jones emphasized that education is not just about acquiring knowledge but about applying it to create opportunities and impact society.
“Discover who you are, take on challenges, and convert them into opportunities,” Rep. Jones urged the graduates. “Education is not only what you learn but how you apply it to transform your communities and distinguish yourself from others.”
He underscored the importance of continuous learning and self-improvement, encouraging graduates not to limit themselves to a high school diploma but to strive for higher education and specialized skills. “Innovation makes you more competitive. Do not stop here become the kind of professionals that inspire others to be constructively jealous of your achievements,” he added.

Rep. Jones highlighted the Liberian government’s responsibility, as enshrined in Article 6 of the 1986 Constitution, to provide accessible and affordable education. He commended the government’s continuous support to BWI, recognizing its role in equipping young Liberians with technical and vocational skills essential for national development.
“Liberia depends on each of you. You must remain focused, discover your potential, and use your skills to contribute to national growth,” he told the graduates.
As a gesture of his commitment to education and innovation, Representative Jones announced the donation of two 25-inch flat-screen televisions and two DSTV compacts to BWI. In his capacity as Chairman of the House Committee on Post and Telecommunications, he facilitated an opportunity for 30 BWI graduates to enroll in the Orange Liberia Foundation Digital Transformation School, an initiative aimed at enhancing digital literacy and technical expertise among young Liberians.
He also revealed that discussions are underway for Orange Liberia to establish a digital center at BWI, ensuring students have access to cutting-edge technological training that aligns with global job market demands.
Representative Jones applauded the parents for their dedication to their children’s education. “Some of you may not have had the opportunity to sit in a classroom, yet you recognized the value of education and made sacrifices to invest in your children’s future. For that, I commend you.”
BWI Principal, Dr. Nancy T. Freeman, acknowledged the institute’s long-standing reputation as one of Liberia’s premier institutions for technical, vocational, and industrial training. She urged graduates to uphold the values instilled in them and to always give back to their alma mater.
“As you step into the unknown, remember that you carry the core values of BWI. Maintain discipline, apply your skills, and serve your communities well,” Dr. Freeman advised.
Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of Education, Anthony Nyanken, reinforced the government’s commitment to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). He emphasized that under the government’s ARREST Agenda, TVET has been identified as a priority sector, crucial for Liberia’s industrialization and workforce development.
“The Ministry of Education sees BWI as the foundation for TVET education in Liberia. We must ensure that our young people are equipped with the technical skills needed to attract investors and drive economic growth,” Minister Nyanken stated. “No longer should investors deny Liberians jobs due to a lack of technical expertise we must change this narrative.”
The graduation ceremony was marked by jubilant celebrations, with parents, educators, government officials, and well-wishers gathered to honor the graduates’ achievements. The event featured cultural performances, traditional dances, and inspirational speeches aimed at motivating the graduates to take charge of their future.
