As Nurses Deliver With Phone-light

Monrovia, Liberia – James Peters, the administrator of Marshall Medical Center in Marshall City, lower Margibi County, has stated that nurses are delivering patients and attending to emergencies using phone lights because the facility lacks electricity.

During President Joseph N. Boakai’s visit over the weekend of October 26, 2024, Peters revealed some of the hospital’s difficulties to President Boakai, adding that nothing has been done since the Liberia Electricity Cooperation (LEC) sent their team to assess the hospital’s electricity problem.

The hospital serves approximately seven communities, including Grand Bassa County, which has a total population of 4,99. Peters also stated that the hospital’s lone ambulance has broken down, causing a significant setback for patients, and that the facility’s fence wire has also been damaged due to sand from the ocean.

However, Peters has urged the President to step in and resolve their property dispute, stating that the hospital’s administration has been requested to purchase the Methodist-owned land on which the facility is located.

As for the hospital’s executives and nurses, President Boakai praised them for their selfless service to the Marshall City community. The president gave them his word that his administration would make every effort to improve the hospital’s facilities and that it had taken note of the difficulties raised.

“There is no hospital that can work without electricity. I can assured you that we will work with the Ministry of Health to give support to this facility.”

The Liberian leader also stated that the hospital’s problems are not limited to the nurses and managers, but also to the people of Liberia. “Take a piece of paper and write all of your need and sign it; we will talk with the minister of health and with ourselves, anything we can do to help, will be done.”
