Monrovia, Liberia -Dr. Clarence Moniba, the Political Leader of the Liberian National Union, has issued an appeal to President Joseph N. Boakai to turn the War and Economic Crimes Court formation from a mere paper work into a reality.
According to Dr. Clarence Moniba, the government’s decision to join the WECC should not be seen as a bluff; rather, it should be carried out with the intention of providing relief, accountability, and honesty to the nation and its citizens.
In a recent statement issued in Monrovia, the political head of LINU said that although adopting laws has not shown to be a problem, it has proven to be challenging for Liberian officials to implement such laws.
He stressed that if the government is serious about seeing the establishment of the war and economic crimes court, then some rules that have protected dishonest officials and war criminals from punishment need to be altered or repealed.
According to Dr. Moniba, the 2003 Act providing immunity for civil and criminal activities should be repealed and Section 17.1 of the Judiciary Law should be amended by the government through the 55th Legislature.
To bring complete peace to Liberia, Dr. Moniba is one of many Liberians, including those who lost loved ones in the conflict, are calling for the speedily establishment of the WECC. Many Liberians still struggle to make ends meet in memory of loved ones who were killed or targeted during the country’s civil war, which raged from 1989 to 2003.
