Monrovia, Liberia – Liberia’s Chief Information Officer (CIO), Sheikh Sheriff, has been appointed to the newly formed ECOWAS Digital Coordination Committee (EDCC), securing a significant position in influencing West Africa’s digital future. In an effort to support President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s agenda for digital transformation, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications announced that Sheriff will represent Liberia on the regional technical body in charge of organizing the execution of the ECOWAS Regional E-Government Strategy.
The appointment comes after the ECOWAS Commission for Liberia formally requested that a senior official be appointed as its National Representative for Digital Governance. Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Sekou M. Kromah, endorsed Sheriff for the job, citing his leadership in furthering the country’s digital governance projects and public sector modernisation efforts.
In his capacity as Liberia’s ambassador, Sheriff will collaborate with digital governance specialists from ECOWAS member states to support the bloc’s goal of establishing a single digital market by 2030, encourage government interoperability, and direct regional e-government programs. It is anticipated that the project will increase cross-border services, boost regional connections throughout West Africa, and strengthen digital trade.
The appointment of Sheriff coincides with Liberia’s acceleration of important digital reforms, such as the impending introduction of the eLiberia Portal, the nationwide rollout of the Government Service Bus (GSB) using X-Road technology, and the National Data Center’s modernization to enhance cybersecurity and digital service delivery.
Additionally, he previously participated in the creation of the ECOWAS Regional E-Government Strategy as one of the technical specialists.
Sheriff described the appointment as both an honour and a responsibility, stating that it demonstrates Liberia’s dedication to fostering regional cooperation while constructing a contemporary, safe, and inclusive digital government.
The appointment was welcomed by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, which described it as a noteworthy milestone that demonstrates ECOWAS’s faith in Liberia’s developing technical leadership in digital governance.
