Monrovia, Liberia – In light of their nonviolent campaigns that concluded on November 12, 2023, the ECOWAS has commended the two presidential candidates in the Liberia 2023 election runoff. Following the contentious presidential election on October 10, 2023, the ECOWAS Commission, via the 80 Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Liberia, has been closely monitoring the pre-election process and events.
In spite of the largely calm atmosphere, the mission said, it observed sporadic incidents and stand-offs in a number of flashpoints, including Lofa, Nimba, Bong, and Montserrado, which have resulted in injuries and subsequent hospitalisation.
All parties involved were urged by ECOWAS to pledge to protect Liberia’s peace and stability prior to, during, and following the election. In addition, the ECOWAS Commission called on the candidates, their supporters, and their political allies to follow the stated promises made within the parameters of the Revised Farmington River Declaration and to be guided by the spirit of national unity, peace, and stability. The regional body urged the security forces to continue acting professionally when performing their obligations towards every individual.
At the same time, the Commission admonishes everyone that anyone who cause disturbance, provocation, or violence will be held accountable by the Community. The ECOWAS Commission urged the National Election Commission (NEC) to uphold the same standards of impartiality and justice in carrying out its responsibilities as it did on October 10, 2023.
ECOWAS asserted that it will keep offering its good offices to all parties involved in an effort to guarantee that the election results are recognised by all, in a peaceful setting, and in accordance with both domestic and global norms.
