Liberian players competing in the sixth season of the Tally Global cricket competition 2022–2023 are requesting financial assistance from the government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The ELWA Compound on the Roberts International Airport highway is the sixth Tally Global cricket event site.
The lack of support for the Liberia Cricket Federation, according to Moses Dennis and Tarnue Duwanah, both of whom play for the Tally Global Cricket Club, has killed the motivation of many Liberian players. On January 2, 2022, the young cricketers met with journalists after their club, Tally Global, defeated Avengers 77-76 in three overs with six wickets.
“Even though we have been practicing this sport since 2010 in elementary school, we cannot identify any visible benefits. Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world, which inspired some of us to play in order to promote our nation. However, the situation is different today due to the government’s lackluster support for the sport and the athletes. We once more want to express our gratitude to Mr. Roopesh Ram, the tournament’s organizer, for preserving the game and providing assistance to the Liberian cricket players.”
The Liberian government was criticized by Moses Dennis and Tarnue Duwanah for undervaluing other young people who exhibited an interest in different sports.
In addition, Michael Lomah, a player of Avengers who scored six runs in their loss to the Tally Global Cricket Club, said that he had always wanted to play cricket because of the variety of chances it offers. He claims that Roopesh Ram, the tournament’s organizer, and others included numerous incentives for black players at the tournament’s conclusion to encourage the participation of many players, particularly Liberians. However, he made note of the government’s lack of backing for the activity, which he claimed has discouraged many Liberian players from taking up the sport.
“I prefer cricket to football. And I want to make it very clear today that not everyone in this country should play football, so I want the government to take other federations and associations like ours into consideration, Michael stated “.
