Monrovia, Liberia – The Mpox National Incident Management System (IMS) has confirmed more new Mpox cases in response to the rise in Mpox cases in Liberia and the subregion.

A press statement dated May 31, 2025, states that the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia has submitted testing findings that bring the total number of active cases and deaths to date to sixty-nine (69) and zero (0), respectively.

According to the press release, the disease is caused by the monkeypox virus, which is passed from animals to people. It then spreads from person to person through contact and has obvious symptoms including big, pus-filled rashes.

The spread of the monkeypox virus Clades IIa and IIb in Liberia is shown via a biomolecular laboratory study employing genomic sequencing. The release claims that the strains are contagious and spreadable, as shown in other nations in the area, for which the NPHIL is still increasing public health awareness at all levels.

The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), which was established by the NPHIL Act of 2016 to address public health threats such as outbreaks, hereby issues the following public health advisory with the goal of preventing cross-border transfer and community transmission due to the high volume of travel within the region.

Meanwhile, NPHIL has advised the public to avoid close contact with persons showing symptoms, such as rashes Wash or sanitized your hands regularly, practice safe sex, report any suspected case of infection and seek medical attention if they develop rashes
    Additional Public Health Advisory.

The release, through the NPHIL encouraged entities and organizations to reduced large gatherings. Also, NPHIL advice Business, Offices, Schools, Places of Worship to make available hand-washing; avoid over-crowdedness in vehicles (specific regulations to be formulated by the Ministry of Transport).

“NPHIL, MOH, other agencies of government, and supporting partners are working collaboratively within the Mpox IMS to continuously strengthen Liberia’s response,” the release stated.

NPHIL said, given its experience with previous outbreaks, they are coordinating with public health authorities of neighbouring countries, and the public is advised to remain calm as the Government of Liberia is committed to safeguarding public health.
