Pres. Boakai Suspends Peter King in RIA US$19M Drug Arrest

Monrovia, Liberia – In anticipation of the results of the ongoing Joint National Security Investigation into the seizure of roughly 237.6 kilograms of cocaine at the Roberts International Airport (RIA), President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has suspended Mr. Peter Malcolm King from his role as a Member of the Board of Directors of the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL).

The president’s order comes after the Ministry of Justice and the Joint Investigative Task Force briefed him on the organizations and people connected to Mr. King that needed more examination as part of the continuing drug inquiry. The suspension is an administrative action meant to safeguard the investigation’s integrity, maintain public trust in government agencies, and prevent any appearance of meddling, the government noted.

The Executive Mansion stressed that this step does not amount to a verdict of guilt against Mr. King and should not be taken as an indication of how the inquiry will turn out. The suspension is only meant to guarantee that the investigation is conducted impartially, openly, and without undue influence.

President Boakai commits his administration’s fight to illegal drug trafficking and strengthening Liberia’s institutions by upholding the rule of law, accountability, and openness. The President calls on the public to maintain calmness, “let investigators carry out their tasks without hindrance, and abstain from speculations that might compromise the integrity of the current procedures.”

The Liberian leader promised citizens and international partners that all matters connected to this investigation will be pursued completely and impartially in conformity with the laws of the Republic of Liberia.
