AFTER SUCCESSFUL PEACE KEEPING MISSION IN MAL I

Monrovia, Liberia – President George Weah, on Saturday, December 23, 202,3 honored men and women of the Armed Forces of Liberia for a successful end of UN Multidimensional Integration Stabilization Mission in the West African Nation of Mali.

The Armed Forces of Liberia were given full participation rights in the peacekeeping missions in Mali in June 2013 by the Liberian government, acting through the National Legislature, under the auspices of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), formerly known as the African-Led International Support Mission to Mali.

The AFL did not take part in any peacekeeping missions after its first one ended in 1968. On June 22, 2013, the newly organised AFL began supporting the African-Led International Support Mission to Mali.

At the event, President George Weah, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Liberia, stated that it was the first peacekeeping operation since the end of the civil violence in Liberia, more than five years after the AFL operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo were completed.

In order to ensure that Liberia contributes to the resolution of other countries in the region, President Weah added that Liberians must acknowledge the efforts of past Commanders in Chief, the AFL’s leadership, and the Men and Women in Arms.

“I must also appreciate the contributions of our partners, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Nigeria, for helping us achieve these milestones.”

The expedition, according to the Liberian leader, is evidence of the region’s democracy and peace.

“As we assemble here on this special occasion commemorating 10 years of Liberia’s involvement in the UN peacekeeping effort in Mali, we also honour the Armed Forces of Liberia’s successful completion of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali.”

The Leader of Liberia reported that the government of Liberia authorised seven hundred thousand US dollars for the fiscal year 2022 to the Ministry of National Defense to support peace operations, mentioning that difficulties persist in spite of the central government’s participation and advising donors to provide additional assistance.
