Prosecution Presents Contentious 2023 Letter as Eidence

As Defence Denies any Financial Misconduct in US$6 Million Trial

Monrovia, Liberia – Prosecutors and defence attorneys clashed over the involvement of the Financial Intelligence Agency on Monday, intensifying proceedings in an ongoing economic sabotage case at Monrovia’s Criminal Court “C.”

During cross-examination, Baba Mohammed Boika, a crucial prosecution witness, told the court that a concerted plot involving former senior officials allegedly exploited the FIA as a conduit to convert public cash.

He claimed that the usage of FIA accounts was made possible by the acts of former National Security Advisor Jefferson Karmoh. According to Mr. Boika, this was the first time money for cooperative security activities had been directed through the agency.

The prosecution stated that they are partially depending on a letter dated September 5, 2023, which gave the FIA permission to manage monies relating to security. The defence, however, contested the allegations, claiming there was insufficient proof of theft or intent to embezzle public funds.

Defence attorneys also contested the witness’s assessment of Liberia’s national security framework. As both sides continue to dispute the facts and legal issues, the court upheld a number of the prosecution’s objections.
