Monrovia, Liberia – In a significant step toward strengthening media integrity and accountability in Liberia, the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) will on this Wednesday, January 28, 2026, formally relaunch the National Media Council (NMC).
A PUL release dated January 26, 2026 states that the National Media Council is a multi-stakeholder organization tasked with enforcing the Code of Ethics and Conduct for media organizations and journalists. Its reactivation is indicative of Liberia’s media landscape’s restored dedication to professional standards, public trust, and press freedom.
The nine-member Council highlights a wide, inclusive approach to media accountability by bringing together members from the journalism and media community, civil society, government, academia, women’s organizations, and religious institutions.
The reorganized Council, which was formerly the Grievance and Ethics Committee and the Media concerns Committee, will now act as a venue for resolving concerns about the behavior and work of journalists and media organizations.
The PUL expresses confidence that the participation of institutions such as the Office of the Ombudsman, Liberia Council of Churches, National Muslim Council of Liberia, National Civil Society Council of Liberia, and Women NGO Secretariat will instill trust in the Counsel, elevate journalistic practice, and reinforce ethical compliance across the media sector.
In accordance with the Press Union of Liberia’s Code of Ethics and Conduct, the National Media Council will have the power to punish journalists and media organizations that are found to be in violation of professional standards once it is seated.
A panel discussion on media self-regulation in the era of digital media and citizen journalism, which reflects the changing opportunities and difficulties facing Liberia’s media, will also be included in the relaunch event.
