Monrovia, Liberia – In commemoration of the Holy Month of Ramadan, the Qatar Fund for Development has sent food supplies to disadvantaged communities in Liberia through the State of Qatar’s Embassy. The aid was given by the Doha-based development organization with the express purpose of helping underprivileged and destitute families during Ramadan, a time when giving to charity has particular religious significance.
The ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, Ramadan, also referred to as the holy month, is one of the most revered times of the year for Muslims worldwide. It commemorates the first time the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad in 610 CE, highlighting the five pillars of Islam fasting (sawm), prayer, charity, and introspection. Through good deeds, observers hope to strengthen devotion, purify the soul, and cultivate empathy for the poor.

The humanitarian act highlights the connection between Qatar and Liberia and demonstrates the two countries’ robust and long-lasting development and humanitarian cooperation. 2009 saw the establishment of diplomatic relations between Liberia and Qatar in Paris, and Doha is home to Liberia’s ambassador. Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf laid the groundwork for future ties when she paid an official visit to Qatar in 2009.
Members of the Liberia Muslim Foundation for Development, Markaz Oubai ibn Ka’b for Quranic Memorization, Iron Factory Central Mosque, Islamic Unity Foundation Center, Alhaji Souleyman Syllah Foundation Mosque, Gurley Street Central Mosque, Muslim communities in Cape Mount County, and fifteen other organizations were among the more than 7,500 people who benefited from the distribution.
Recipients noted that the timely contribution greatly reduced the load on families during the holy month and expressed their sincere gratitude and happiness for the donation.
