The Alternative National Congress has alleged that it has observed that there is overwhelming evidence that the Liberian government financed the attack on the peaceful demonstration staged by the students of the University of Liberia on July 26 independent day in Monrovia.
On July 26, 2022, Liberia’s independence day anniversary, members of the Coalition for Democratic Change Council of Patriots allegedly brutalized peaceful demonstrators in the presence of the officers of the Liberia National Police.
Speaking in an interview with the Voice of America Nightline Africa, ANC Secretary General, Counselor Aloysius Toe, said those responsible for the attack must be swiftly arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law in order to serve as a deterrent.
According to him, the ANC believes that under no condition should the Liberian government allow or finance other citizens to disrupt the rights to protest by students of the University of Liberia on issues that they believe to be against the interest of the Liberian people.
“Our specific request has been to the Justice Minister to set up an independent panel of investigation and we hope that the Attorney General will yield to our call by setting up a panel comprising of civil society organizations and international partners.”
Cllr. Toe explained that there are facts to prove that the government is involved in the attack because there have been reports and the international community has been informed that the government is responsible for organizing, financing, and sponsoring the Sabu unit, the Cuba Unit and the Moscow Empire as well as group of vigilante and militants.
The ANC Secretary General claimed that these were some of the same people responsible for the disturbances resulting in injuries in opposition rallies in the electoral districts 13 and 15 in Montserrado County elections a few years ago.
“One does not need another scientific examination to determine the government’s involvement in these disturbances, the government sponsored these canter protests and there has been no action against the perpetrators of this violence. There are videos on social media to assist the Attorney General to investigate this violence and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Counselor Toe demanded that the Liberian government should immediately arrest the members of the CDC –COP who were seen attacking the students and circulated on social media.
The protest code-named: “ Fix The Country Campaign,” coincided with the independence day celebration on July 26, 2022, in Monrovia.
The protest was aimed at pressurizing President George Weah to keep his campaign promises and solve the social and economic challenges facing the country
Since the CDC-COP attack on the peaceful demonstration, there has been criticism of the Liberian government for its alleged reluctance to immediately arrest the perpetrators of the July 26 attack on the UL students’ demonstration.
