Monrovia, Liberia – The Senate reconvened on Monday under a veil of sad contemplation after the recent fire calamity that impacted the Legislature. Senate Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence recognized the low tone of this year’s inauguration ceremony, citing regrettable occurrences that had hampered parliamentary activities.
Despite the difficulties of recent months, “I am optimistic that all members of the Legislature will return energized to solve the important concerns confronting our Republic,” she stated.
It is reported that due to the recent fire disaster, the inauguration ceremony will not include conventional components such as guest participation or the annual lunch with the House of Representatives.
According to custom, members of the Senate and House of Representatives will march together for the ceremonial raising of county flags. Following that, both chambers will adjourn to their respective quarters for brief opening sessions. The Legislature’s reopening is consistent with Article 32(a) of the Liberian Constitution, which requires the body to meet yearly.
During the Senate session, President Pro Tempore Karnga-Lawrence opening statement detailed the Senate’s agenda for the second session. Her talk focus on the first session’s accomplishments, such as legislation approved, executive confirmations, and ongoing committee concerns. She will highlight important legislative goals for the next months, including youth empowerment, health among others.
