EU Mission Engages Liberian Lawmakers on Electoral Reforms Ahead of 2029 Elections

Monrovia, Liberia – The House Committee on Elections and Inaugurations of the 55th Legislature of Liberia hosted a pivotal meeting with the European Union Elections Follow-Up Mission (EUEFM), underscoring the EU’s commitment to bolstering Liberia’s democratic processes.

Lawmakers, EU delegates, and stakeholders converged at the Boulevard Palace in Monrovia on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, for a pivotal meeting chaired by Sinoe County District #1 Rep. Thomas Romeo Quioh, Chairperson of the House Committee on Elections and Inaugurations. The gathering focused on critical electoral reforms, including threshold-setting and constituency boundary delimitation, ahead of the 2029 elections.

“We welcome this engagement as an opportunity for frank and productive exchanges regarding reforms already undertaken, as well as those currently envisaged within Liberia’s electoral legal framework and practice,” Rep. Quioh highlighting the EU’s role in supporting Liberia’s democratic journey.

The House Committee Chair on Elections and Inaugurations, Hon. Prof. Thomas Romeo Quioh stressed that no electoral system is perfect, but through dialogue, institutional reforms, stakeholder engagement, and constitutional adherence, nations can progressively strengthen public trust in democratic governance.

He also referenced the EU mission’s 2023 election observation report, adding that it provides technical insights and comparative experiences to inform Liberia’s reform process, focusing on transparency, inclusiveness, and accountability.

He further cited that Liberia’s electoral reforms aim to uphold constitutional principles of fair representation and equity, with the threshold-setting exercise poised to redefine constituency boundaries based on the 2022 census data. The meeting also underscores Liberia’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance and public trust, with the EU’s sustained support.

The European Union Election Follow-Up Mission (EUEFM) in Liberia was founded following the 2023 presidential and legislative elections and aims to follow up on recommendations from the EU Election Observation Mission’s final report. And supporting Liberia’s electoral reforms and democratic consolidation Promoting transparency, inclusiveness, and accountability in Liberia’s electoral processes.
