Former Bong District #2 Candidate Kerkula Calls for Probe Into Alleged US$19 Million Drug Case

Reported by: Edwin Khakie Jr

Monrovia, Liberia – Former Bong County Electoral District No. 2 representative candidate Jerry Kerkulah Kollie has called on President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to launch a thorough investigation into individuals allegedly connected to a reported US$19 million drug case in Liberia.

Kollie, a former captain of the Armed Forces of Liberia, said those responsible for the alleged drug-related activities should be identified and held accountable under the law. He also called for the resignation of the leadership of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, arguing that the institution has been ineffective in combating the growing drug problem in the country.

According to Kollie, the increasing prevalence of illegal drugs, particularly among young people, demonstrates what he described as the agency’s inability to effectively carry out its mandate. “The government must take decisive action against those involved in the drug trade and strengthen the fight against narcotics,” Kollie said.

The former political candidate further proposed that the responsibility for combating illegal drugs be transferred from the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency to the Bureau of Veterans Affairs, which he believes could provide stronger oversight and enforcement measures.

Kollie’s comments come amid growing public concern over substance abuse and drug trafficking in Liberia, issues that government officials have repeatedly identified as major threats to public health, security, and youth development. He urged the Boakai administration to intensify efforts to curb the spread of narcotics and ensure that all individuals implicated in drug-related crimes are investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Kerkula made the statement at a press conference on June 15, 2026, in Monrovia. Meanwhile, the Liberian authorities have previously pledged to strengthen anti-drug enforcement and expand programmes aimed at reducing substance abuse, particularly among vulnerable youth populations.
