Monrovia, Liberia—The Managing Director of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), Mohammed Ali, has been called by the Plenary of the House of Representatives to appear before the Body on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, in order to clarify recent public remarks regarding water access and revenue collection in Liberia.
The decision was made on Thursday, May 21, 2026, during the House of Representatives’ fourth day of sitting of the second quarter of the third session. The Nimba County Electoral Districts #7 and #9 representatives, Hon. Taa Wongbe and Hon. Musa Hassan Bility, submitted two different communications that prompted the plenary’s action.
The parliamentarians requested the LWSC managing director to appear in their communication to Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon in order to clarify remarks made in recent media appearances about the state of water accessibility and payment compliance nationwide. According to the communications, Mr. Ali claimed that almost 76% of Liberia’s population has access to a basic water supply and that more than 17,000 residences in Monrovia are connected to running water. Additionally, he revealed that over 53% of water consumers do not pay their bills.
The lawmakers pointed out that the remarks have sparked intense public debate and multiple interpretations about what “basic water access” is, the difference between household connectivity and dependable water service delivery, and worries about the viability of LWSC operations in the face of high reported nonpayment rates.
The Plenary decided that the LWSC Managing Director must appear before the House to give further information and updates on the current situation of Liberia’s water sector, given the significance of water access to infrastructural development, public health, and national growth. The House of Representatives is still dedicated to guaranteeing accountability, openness, and better service delivery in organizations that offer the Liberian people vital public services.
