Capitol Hill, Monrovia – By decree, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has declared Friday, April 10, 2026, “National Fast and Prayer Day,” a national holiday that will be honoured across the Republic. The Day is set aside as a day of prayer, fasting, meditation, and supplication, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, so that our collective efforts as individuals may be crowned with tremendous accomplishments to the common cause of the nation, the state, and our common humanity.
In accordance with the Republic of Liberia’s Patriotic and Cultural Observances Law, Chapter 1, the Proclamation declares the second Friday in April of each year as a National Fast and Prayer Day for the country’s prosperity and in humble prayer to the Almighty God for protection, guidance, and peace in their national affairs.
The proclamation recalled times when the nation experienced tremendous natural phenomena and human-caused national crises that, by God’s grace, spared our country from much injury, devastation, and destruction in many places of the world. The release further stated that the need for prayers in honour of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice is still unmet and that a sizable portion of our citizens continue to live in uncertain circumstances in the Diaspora.
The Proclamation also exhorts all prelates, priests, elders, deacons, evangelists, imams, and citizens, regardless of religious beliefs, to unite in their houses of worship, in every city, town, village, hamlet, and residence within the boundaries of the Republic of Liberia, wearing basic, inexpensive clothing, to fast, pray, and meditate starting at eight in the morning.
The decree further requires that all public offices, business buildings, and marketplaces be closed during the observance in order to further honour God’s love and guidance. All citizens and international residents are also expected to abstain from their usual daily activities, including their hobbies and jobs.
