Monrovia, Liberia – G. Andy Quamie, the deputy minister of sports, has called on Mustapha Raji, the president of the Liberian Football Association, to lead by listening and advance the federation.
Minister Quamie was responding to remarks made by the LFA chief, who claimed that some stakeholders were insensitive to the numerous changes and developmental initiatives the football house under his direction have undertaken.
“Mr. President, I heard you mention the work done; there is no question that we are not blind, but the LFA needs to be open to constructive criticism. No human person on the planet is perfect, but you can still grow in other areas if you’re prepared to own up to your faults and take constructive feedback. To ensure that there is harmony in our football, the Executive Committee and the Stakeholders should keep talking to each other.”
Minister G. Andy Quamie stated that although managing football in Liberia is a difficult endeavor, 95% of the clubs are owned by individuals, with only 5% being controlled by businesses.
He claims that in order to keep their clubs running in the name of football, club owners have frequently taken advantage of their families.
“Today, young people in Liberia play football in all age groups because stakeholders are willing to make sacrifices out of their passion. It’s difficult to run football. I express my gratitude to the Stakeholders, the Third Division, Community League, Conference, Wowen’s League, First Division, and Second Division are all run differently, especially in that they take money out of their pocket.”
The following address was made by the Deputy Sports Minister at the 28th Ordinary Congress of the LFA on April 13, 2024, at the organization’s offices in Congo Town.
Watanga FC, led by Deputy Sports Minister G. Andy Quamie, won the 2023–2024 Orange First Division League, their second title in 27 years of existence.
They conceded just one loss and seven draws during the season, finishing with 61 points from 26 league games.
Cooper Sannoh, one of the most renowned local coaches, is the head coach of the Paynesville-based team. Watanga FC will compete in the CAF Champions League in 2024–2025 on behalf of Liberia.
