Rep. Fahnbulleh Pushes Bill to Establish Bong Mines Vocational Training Institute

Reported by: Edwin Khakie Jr

Monrovia, Liberia – The Plenary of the House of Representatives has forwarded to three key legislative committees a landmark bill seeking to establish the Bong Mines Vocational Training Institute (BMVTI), following its submission Tuesday by Bong County Electoral District #7 Representative Foday Edward Fahnbulleh.

The proposed legislation has been referred to the Committees on Education and Public Administration, Judiciary, and Ways, Means and Finance, which have been given two weeks to review the bill and report back to Plenary.

If enacted into law, the proposed measure, titled “An Act to Establish the Bong Mines Vocational Training Institute (BMVTI) as a Semi-Autonomous Public Institution for Technical and Vocational Education,” would create a public vocational institution dedicated to providing technical and professional skills training for young people in Bong County and across Liberia.

Presenting the bill before Plenary, Representative Fahnbulleh described the initiative as a major step toward expanding technical and vocational education, saying the institute would support the government’s drive to build a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of a modern and competitive economy.

According to him, the proposed institution will offer practical training in specialized technical fields, equipping young Liberians with employable skills, promoting entrepreneurship, reducing unemployment, and strengthening local economic development.

Representative Fahnbulleh argued that the establishment of the institute would create new opportunities for thousands of young people, particularly those who lack access to higher education, while helping address the country’s growing demand for skilled technicians and vocational professionals.

Following debate, members of the House unanimously agreed to forward the bill to the relevant committees for detailed scrutiny. The joint committees are expected to consult stakeholders, examine the legal, financial and administrative implications of the proposal, and submit recommendations to Plenary within two weeks for possible legislative action.

The proposed Bong Mines Vocational Training Institute is expected to become a major center for technical and vocational education if approved, with supporters saying it could play a significant role in preparing Liberia’s workforce for sustainable economic growth and national development.
