Steve Zargo, the chair of the Senate Committee on Defense and Security, has urged the Chief of Staff of the Liberian Armed Forces to publicly identify those he believes are plotting a coup.
On Tuesday, December 6, 2022, Major-General Prince C. Johnson, III stated that he had gotten “loads” of text messages from individuals pleading with him to overthrow the government due to President Weah’s protracted absence from the nation.
Such incomplete disclosure, according to Senator Zargo, is a plot to overthrow a democratically elected administration and calls for an immediate investigation at the highest levels of the Liberian Government.
Due to General Johnson’s incomplete revelation, opposition politicians and civil society organizations have also harshly criticized him.
Senator Zargo, however, has defended the Army Chief of Staff’s widely criticized statement, claiming that the General made no mistakes in making it.
In a remark that drew criticism, the Chief of Staff issued a warning that the army would not permit anyone or any group of individuals to hinder the nation’s hard-won calm.
Senator Zargo, in response to the Statement, stated that the army is authorized by law to perform such tasks when the police are overburdened.
