Monrovia, Liberia – The Alternative National Congress’ (ANC) political leader, Alexander B. Cummings, has promised to speak out more on Liberia’s problems in 2025. Cummings acknowledged the continued hardships of the common people and promised to raise his voice in the national conversation as he considered the achievements and disappointments of 2024 in his New Year’s speech to Liberians.
As Liberians, Cummings said, “2024 was a year of hope, challenges, and reflection for us individually and collectively. The seamless transition from one government to the next was a step forward for our democracy, but it also faced setbacks, as demonstrated by the House of Representatives saga.”
Citing pressures from the expense of living, difficult economic conditions, and an unpredictable political climate as major challenges that demand immediate response, Cummings highlighted the struggles faced by many Liberian families. He voiced concerns about governance and economic management under the Unity Party-led government, even as he acknowledged the advancements achieved in the peaceful transition of power.
According to the ANC leader, he purposefully kept quiet since the new administration entered office so that the government could establish itself while he conducted consultations and heard the public’s concerns. However, Cummings indicated that he was prepared to get more involved in 2025 in response to growing requests for him to adopt a more aggressive approach.
“Despite these difficulties, many Liberians, including supporters, have urged me to speak out about what is going on in our nation and to hold the UP-led government accountable. “You’re heard,” he said.
“Although I will still wish the government well because their success would benefit the Liberian people, I will speak out more about our nation’s problems and offer viewpoints that I hope will be beneficial in the best interests of our nation and its citizens.”
The ANC political was also very vocal during the Weah administration. Mr. Cummings came third in the 2017 presidential and general elections.
