Classes Resume on AME University Campus as Fire Investigators Continue

Monrovia, Liberia – A formal investigation into the fire incident that occurred early on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at AME University’s main campus on Camp Johnson Road has been initiated by the authorities, despite the fact that academic activities have fully resumed after what officials described as a prompt and well-coordinated emergency response. The fire that began within Hatcher Hall was successfully put out before it could spread outside the affected area, according to a statement from the university administration. There were no recorded fatalities.

According to preliminary reports, students and members of the university’s internal security team reportedly acted as first responders when they discovered and confronted the issue. Before outside emergency crews arrived, the fire is believed to have been considerably slowed down by their prompt use of strategically positioned fire extinguishers.

Later, the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS) assumed complete control of the situation and put out the fire entirely in collaboration with the Liberia National Police. Officials have verified that stabilization was accomplished quickly, averting potentially serious structural damage to the building.

In cooperation with the university’s security section, LNFS technicians are investigating the cause of the fire and potential cause as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are expected to assess the building’s electrical systems and other possible sources of fire.

University administrators have commended what they called “effective preparedness measures,” citing previous staff fire warden training provided by the LNFS. The administration also acknowledged that the incident’s impact was lessened by the availability of fire safety equipment around the campus and the synchronized response of staff, students, and security personnel.

The institution stated that the professionalism of national emergency services and the quick response of our internal responders were crucial in controlling the situation. Despite the inconvenience, AME University verified that classes on campus continued as usual and that academic operations quickly resumed as the situation was stabilized.

While encouraging composure while investigations continue, the organization has reaffirmed its dedication to safety and security. After forensic and technical evaluations of Hatcher Hall are finished, authorities are anticipated to provide additional information.
