USA – The former US president and likely Republican candidate for president in 2024 USA general election, Donald J. Trump, was found guilty on 34 felony charges of falsifying business documents in a case involving a payment that silenced a porn star.
On Thursday, May 30, 2024, a jury consisting of 12 New Yorkers found Trump guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records. The jury deliberated for two days before reaching a verdict in a case filled with details of covert deals, scandals in the tabloids, and an Oval Office agreement reminiscent of Watergate, wherein records were fabricated to conceal a sexual scandal that had the potential to ruin Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. This remarkable trial put the American legal system to the test and will have repercussions until the election in November.
The jury concluded that Mr. Trump had falsified documents to hide the nature of payments made to his former fixer, Michael D. Cohen, and that, in reality, Mr. Trump was compensating Mr. Cohen for a $130,000 hush-money agreement the fixer made with porn star Stormy Daniels in order to silence her claims of having an affair with Mr. Trump.
A four-year prison sentence is possible due to the felony conviction, but it’s possible that Mr. Trump will never set foot in a jail cell. It might take years before the case is settled because he will almost definitely appeal the decision and could be placed on probation when he is sentenced. Nevertheless, the jury’s verdict, which ends the only one of Mr. Trump’s four criminal charges that was probably going to go to trial before Election Day, is a landmark event in American history.
The former president, according to CNN, sat through the majority of the trial with a grim expression on his face as the jury delivered their decision. The sentencing of former President Trump is set for July.
As a result, Trump is still eligible to be president, because the Constitution does not forbid a felon from seeking office or holding the presidency.
Meanwhile, a number of residents responded instantly to the historic trial result following the guilty conviction.
While some protesters pumped their fists, one outside the courthouse held a huge placard that read, “Trump Convicted.” In an email requesting donations, Mr. Trump’s team referred to him as a “political prisoner.” On social media, President Biden’s campaign pushed supporters to vote because it was the only way to prevent Mr. Trump from winning the presidency.
Simultaneously, Alvin L. Bragg, the district attorney for Manhattan, expressed gratitude to the jury for finding Mr. Trump guilty of falsifying his company documents in order to hide a plot to rig the 2016 election.
The jury has spoken, he said, and while there are many voices out there, only the jury’s voice matters.Donald Trump, a Republican contender and former US president, is still upbeat about his chances of winning the November election this year.
