“From 15 Counties To China”

Liberia Deploys “Unity Team” In Bold Sports Diplomacy Push

Monrovia, Liberia – Liberia has announced a historic football delegation made up of all fifteen countries, which will represent the nation in a historic friendly tournament in China. The initiative is being hailed by government officials as a new chapter in sports diplomacy, and it is a strong demonstration of both national unity and international engagement.

The team is more than just a football team; it is a representation of inclusivity, decentralization, and cultural pride. It was formally introduced on Friday, April 24, 2026, at a ceremony attended by senior government officials and the Chinese Ambassador.

Speaking at the ceremony, Liberia’s Minister of Youth and Sports Atty. Cornelia W. Kruah disclosed that each player was selected from their home county, a deliberate move by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to ensure nationwide representation and opportunity.

“This is not just a team; this is Liberia, emphasizing the government’s commitment to giving young people across the country equal access to international exposure. We didn’t want a Montserrado-based team, we wanted a Liberia-based team,” she said.

As part of the expanding people-to-people engagement between Liberia and the People’s Republic of China, she said the group will travel to China to take part in the Village Super League friendly matches in Guizhou Province.

Samuel A. Stevquoah, the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, emphasized the initiative’s deeper significance by pointing out how football has always brought Liberians together, even in times of violence.

“Whenever the Lone Star played, the guns went silent. Football is not just a game, it is a unifier, a symbol of hope, and a tool for peace,” he narrated.

The Minister encouraged the young athletes to represent Liberia well, emphasizing that behaviour, self-control, and cross-cultural interactions would be more important than the outcome.

In terms of international relations, Chinese Ambassador Yin Chengwu called the visit a “key moment” in bolstering bilateral relations, especially in light of the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchange, a framework decided upon during high-level meetings between President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and President Xi Jinping.

“Football will serve as a bridge across mountains and seas, encouraging the players to deepen friendships, promote cultural understanding, and embody the future of China-Liberia relations,” the Ambassador said.

He added that dozens of Liberian students are already enrolled in scholarship programs in Guizhou Province, China, and that the initiative also emphasizes growing sub-national cooperation by strengthening ties between Liberia and the province through sports, education, and cultural exchange initiatives.

Expectations are high as the squad gets ready to leave, both for their on-field performance and the message they convey. This “Unity Team” could demonstrate that football is still one of Liberia’s most effective diplomatic instruments in a nation striving for harmony, opportunity, and international involvement.
