Gbarpolu County football team is through to the grand final of the 2021/2022 National County Sports meet following a 2:1 win over Margibi County in semifinal one of the competitions on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at the SKD Sports Complex in Paynesville.

Nimba County defeated Grand Bassa County 2:0 in a tension pack semifinal. Both teams were involved in a serious face fight before the kickoff of the match on grounds that medicines were buried in the opposite goal posts.

Their actions did not just delay the match, but it prompted the Chief Patron of Sports, President George Weah to leave the field immediately having witnessed Gbarpolu County vs Margibi match.

Following the match, Youth and Sports Minister Zeogar Wilson took a back over what he terms as unsportsmanlike behavior of Grand Bassa and Nimba Counties football teams.

According to him, the unsportsmanship attitude did not only cause embarrassment to the sporting population but also contravened the spirit and intent of the National County Sports Meet.

The Minister noted that the ugly and embarrassing situation had the potential to derail the gains that have been made over the years and imposed a fine of one thousand United States dollars (USD$ 1000.00) to each of the Counties to be paid before the grand final on Sunday, January 16, 2022.

He furthered that the National County Sports meet is for Peace, Unity, and Reconciliation, which should be demonstrated by every County at all times.

.This year’s edition of the competition is under the theme: “Celebrating 200 hundred years of togetherness through sports”. Lofa County and Rivercess County will meet in the grand final of the kickball category of the Tournament.

Lofa defeated Maryland County’s 8:0 home runs in the semifinal while Rivercess County beat Grand Gedeh County 8:1 home runs in the other semifinal.

The grand final matches in both kickball and football categories will take place this Sunday, January 16, 2022, at SKD Sports complex where the quarter and semifinals matches are staged.
